Canada’s largest sailing ship will cruise Canadian waters this summer with the launch of Coastal cruising adventures, a variety of cruise programs in Atlantic Canada for 2004.
The Halifax, Nova Scotia based company is introducing an exciting new way for outdoor adventure enthusiasts, heritage seekers, golfers and maritime visitors to explore and travel to coastal communities in Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Starting in 2004, Caledonia, a majestic 245-foot tall ship, will embark from Halifax, Nova Scotia on weekly seven-day cruises. Cruises range from Newfoundland’s Fjords, Bays and Tickles to Nova Scotia’s Canada Seacoast. Eight of those voyages will focus on golf while other cruises have been designed to explore regions of Canada’s Eastern seacoast in logical themes of culture, geography and history.
“It is a means to discover and celebrate Canada’s coastal regions in a new and relaxing manner. Our passengers can enjoy remote culturally significant communities, unique United Nations World Heritage Sites, some of the country’s top golf courses and many of Canada’s finest natural wonders,” says Caledonia’s co-captain and president Doug Prothero.
Caledonia will make regular port calls in some of Atlantic Canada’s finest attractions like Gros Morne National Park, Town of Lunenburg, including well-known golf courses like Dundee, Highlands Links, Crowbush Cove, Dundarave, and Mill River. The ship offers a unique alternative to contemporary cruise programs, which are often over-crowded with inescapable group-activities in large ports.
“It promises to be the most exciting and memorable sailing adventures offered anywhere in the world. We’ll be a floating boutique-hotel bringing passengers from one experience to the other each day. For example, we will be able to see the golf courses from the ship,” Prothero says.
Caledonia entered Halifax last September under full sail after completing a 6,400-kilometre promotional tour from Hamilton, ON to Halifax, NS with port calls in Cleveland, Toledo, Port Stanley, Chicago, Muskegon, Bay City, Sarnia, Toronto, Rochester, Kingston, Montreal, Quebec City, Summerside, and Charlottetown. She was the flagship of the American Sail Training Association’s (ASTA) annual Tall Ships Event in the Great Lakes.
Since the arrival to her homeport of Halifax, the ship’s interior has been completely renovated throughout the winter months to include 33 finely appointed four-star passengers cabins and spacious entertainment spaces including a library, a pub highlighted by a beautiful mahogany bar boasting a collection of rare single malt whiskies and a dining salon that will present the finest in gourmet meals and regional favourites.
Featuring queen-sized beds in her suites, Caledonia can accommodate up to 80 guests and a crew of 20 for unparalleled personal service. The vessel’s re-launch in 2004 will mark the beginning of a new Canadian-based cruise industry for Canada’s East Coast.
Starting Dec 5, 2004 Caledonia will depart weekly from St. Lucia in the Caribbean, voyaging the Windward Islands including Martinique, and Dominica.
