At the centre of the Meuse Valley tourist industry, DINANT is a pretty little town slung along the river beneath craggy green cliffs about 30km south of Namur. A handy base for venturing into the surrounding countryside either by boat, bike or on foot, its only drawback is its popularity - on summer weekends the place literally heaves with visitors. The town also has a couple of minor attractions of its own, the Gothic church of Notre-Dame (daily 9am-6pm; free), topped with the bulbous spire that features on all the brochures, and the mainly nineteenth-century citadel (daily 10am-6pm; July & Aug until 7pm), right behind the church and reached either by cable car (?5.20) or by a long flight of steps; the fortress is, however, a bit dull if you've already been to the one in Namur.
